All zones connect to a single valve manifold near your water source. Each zone gets one 24VAC solenoid valve wired back to your controller.

Follow these steps in order. Each phase builds on the last — don't skip ahead.

1
Plan & Prep
Before you dig anything
Call 811 — free utility locating service. Required by law before any digging. Allow 2–3 business days.
Measure water pressure at the outdoor hose bib using a pressure gauge ($8 at any hardware store). Note the PSI — you need at least 40 PSI for rotors.
Measure flow rate — fill a 5-gallon bucket from the hose bib and time it. Divide 300 by the seconds = GPM.
Print your blueprint and mark your water source, zones, and trench paths on the ground with marking paint.
Gather tools: trenching spade or rent a trencher, pipe cutter, hole punch, wire stripper, volt meter.
2
Tap the Water Supply
Connect to your main line
Shut off the water at the main and open a hose bib to relieve pressure.
Install a backflow preventer on the supply line — required in most jurisdictions and protects your drinking water.
Install the manifold downstream of the backflow preventer. See the Manifold Assembly tab for the exact configuration.
Run the main supply line (¾" poly or PVC) from the manifold toward your zones following your blueprint. Keep it 6" deep minimum.
3
Trench & Lay Pipe
Zone by zone
Trench 6–8" deep along your zone paths. Curve around obstacles — avoid sharp 90° bends in the main line.
Lay lateral pipe (½" poly) from the zone valve to each head position. Use your Parts List for exact footage per zone.
Install T-fittings and elbows at each head location. Leave 4–6" of pipe stub above grade for the riser.
Cap all open ends before pressurising — you'll flush the system before installing heads.
4
Install Heads
Rotors, sprays, and drip emitters
Flush the system first — open each zone valve manually and run water for 30 seconds to clear debris before installing any heads.
Install pop-up rotors using swing pipe (funny pipe) for flexibility. The top of the head should sit ¼" above final grade.
Set spray arcs — rotors can be adjusted 40°–360°. Match arc to your zone map. Use the smallest arc that covers the area to avoid over-spray.
For drip zones — lay ½" drip tubing along plant rows, punch holes, and insert ½ GPH emitters at each plant. Stake tubing every 18".
Install pressure regulators on drip zones — drip systems need 25–30 PSI max or emitters will blow off.
5
Wire the Controller
Power and zone wiring
Run 18 AWG multi-strand wire from the controller to the valve manifold. Bundle per zone with a common wire (white = common).
Connect each solenoid valve — one colored wire per zone valve, all common wires splice to the white common. Use waterproof wire connectors.
Mount the controller in a sheltered location — garage wall or exterior rated enclosure. Must be within reach of a GFCI outlet.
Program run times using your Water Schedule tab as the starting point. Adjust after observing coverage.
6
Test & Commission
Final checks before backfilling
Run each zone manually from the controller and walk the zone. Check every head is popping up, rotating, and covering its arc.
Check for leaks at all fittings, T-connections, and risers while the system is pressurized.
Adjust head spacing — heads should throw water to the next head (head-to-head coverage). Raise or lower risers as needed.
Backfill trenches only after all zones pass the leak test. Tamp soil gently — don't compact directly over pipe.
Set your schedule — run early morning (4–6 AM) to minimise evaporation and fungal pressure. Start conservatively and increase if needed.
💡
Pro tip: Take photos of all trenches before backfilling. If you ever need to repair or expand, you'll know exactly where every pipe runs without digging blind.
